Course: Copyright issues in Academic Libraries

Description: The influence of copyright law on our work as information professionals is pervasive. As information professionals we have a duty to be well-informed of our responsibilities in print and digital academic communication environments, where the issue of copyright is ever present. This seminar is designed to enable library staff gain an understanding of the principle of copyright, the need for compliance, and the practicalities of how copyright affects a range of services offered by academic libraries in-house, online, in teaching environments and in the dissemination of research.

Course Objectives:  

The seminar’s objectives include:

  • Understanding the principle of copyright in academic environments
  • Exploring copyright issues in digital environments
  • Gaining an insight into the role of the Irish Copyright Licensing Agency in teaching and research environments
  • Copyright issues affecting Technology Enhanced Learning
  • Awareness of issues affecting future copyright legislation and data protection compliance

Course Outline:

This event will be in seminar format. It will consist of a series of lectures and short presentations by a variety of specialists on copyright and regulatory affairs, with particular reference to current copyright legislation in the Republic of Ireland. There will be opportunities for questions and answers.

Professor Eoin O’Dell (Trinity College Dublin) will present the keynote lecture.


This course is aimed at all academic library staff and information professionals who are involved in disseminating information in print and digital formats and need to comply with copyright legislation.
